Natural Organic Beauty Products have been used for centuries. It's only been in the last 50 years that personal care products containing artificial ingredients have been sold to consumers. Today’s consumer has begun to gravitate back towards more natural ingredients. In an effort to be identified with organic and environmentally friendly issues, some manufacturers of mass market products (brands found in grocery, discount and drug chains) market themselves as “natural.”
What kind of artificial ingredients are found in common personal and beauty care products? These products often contain parabens, petrochemicals, sodium lauryl sulfate, glycols and phthalates. Parabens are commonly used as a preservative and put into shampoos, makeup, shaving gels, moisturizers and a variety of other products. Parabens are synthetic preservatives that are potential endocrine inhibitors. Another element commonly found in mass market beauty products are petrochemicals—chemicals made from petroleum. Petrochemicals are non-renewable byproducts of crude oil with potentially dangerous impurities. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates foods that are “Certified Organic.” However, there is little actual regulation and considerable confusion in the Health and Body Care arena as to just what makes a product “natural.”
As a result, the Natural Products Association has developed standards and a certification process for personal care products. Manufacturers that make products with all natural ingredients and that are free of other contaminants may submit their products and apply for the Natural Products Association seal. The program is relatively new and voluntary.
As a result, the staff at Bare Essentials Natural Market has developed our own process to select only the best companies that manufacture high quality natural personal care products. The team at Bare Essentials is trained and experienced to look at labels and discern whether or not a product meets the standards of Natural Personal Care Products that we sell. Some of the questions we ask manufacturers are:
• On average, what percent natural are your products?
• Do you use any of these ingredients: Parabens,
Sulfates, Chemical Sunscreens, Petro Chemicals, Glycols,
Phthalates, PEGs or PPGs, DEA/TEA, Synthetic Polymers,
Formaldehyde Donors or 1, 4-Dioxanes?
• Do you use any of these processes: Ethoxylation,
Sulfination or Polymerization?
• On average, what percent PCR (post consumer recycled)
is your packaging? Is your packaging recyclable?
• Do you test on animals?
Consider your health and the health of those in your family; buy products that are free of toxins and lead, plastics, silicones, petroleum, artificial fragrances, dyes and other unsafe extras that usually find their ways into the beauty products that you will find in the chain grocery or drug store.
